The European Otter is the biggest representative of water weasels in Europe. Otters can reach a maximum length of 1.40 m (4'7"). They are predominantly active from dusk to dawn. They are excellent swimmers and can dive to depths of 18 m (20 yd). Their waterproof pelt contains up to 50,000 individual hairs per cm² (323,000 per in²). They feed on gastropods, frogs, fish and water birds. Extensive population in the State of Brandenburg but threatened by extinction in other areas.
