Spread all over Europe 150 years ago. Progenitor of all breeds of dogs. Humans considered the wolf as their enemy and consequently chased and destroyed its population in vast parts of the world. Wolves are very intelligent and shy, shunning humans. They live in packs, in which only the highest-ranking animals are allowed to breed. They are out-and-out carnivores and can eat up to 10 kg (22 lb) of meat in one meal. Chasing wolves can reach sprint speeds approaching 65 km/h (40 mph). Lifespan: approx. 19 years.
